Solo travel can be a daunting thought at first. The idea of being somewhere new, the fear of the unknown, the thought of being lonely, and the ultimate burning question of whether solo travel is safe. The short answer to that question is yes, it’s safe, but like with anything, there are precautions you need to put in place, and for the other questions you have, let’s find out if it’s just a myth or if it is the truth.

Why do people travel solo? With so many questions surrounding safety and loneliness regarding solo travel, you’re probably wondering why you should even solo travel, right?

The top 5 reasons I believe many people choose to solo travel is because:

  1. They are tired of waiting for others to make travel plans.

  2. They are looking for a liberating experience.

  3. They want to embark on a journey of self-discovery.

  4. They crave the freedom to travel the way they want.

  5. They travel for a purpose.

At first, I decided to travel solo because I was tired of making travel plans with friends and watching them fall through. However, once I took the plunge and went on my first solo trip, I realised not only did all my dream trips come to fruition, I also discovered a lot about myself and realised how capable I was, and how liberated it made me feel. I now constantly crave the freedom of planning my own adventures, discovering more about the world and myself and continue to have liberating experiences. Traveling solo has unlocked some of my best life experiences, and I believe every should experience solo travel once in their lifetime. If you are still hesitating about booking your ticket then lets take a look deeper at some solo travel myths that is holding you back.

1. Myth: Solo travel is lonely and boring

Truth: Many people think that when you solo travel, you will be alone 24/7. But that´s far from the truth. Solo travel makes you more open to meeting new people, whether it be locals or other tourists. You will meet many like-minded people along the way and connect with locals hearing their interesting life stories. If you want to travel but do not want to do it totally alone, there are many travel options available like facebook groups like solo travellers or girl who travels where you can connect with fellow travellers. You could also book with a tour guide, private tour like Viator and GetYourGuide and go on organised tour with other solo travellers.

My preferred travel style is to travel alone without a tour company and book private and group tours while in the country. This gives me the most freedom to travel however I want but allows me to engage with people on my journey.

Another fantastic strategy I did was is booking a hotel with breakfast included. It's a brilliant way to kickstart your day, and it also opens up opportunities to meet fellow travellers. I've had the pleasure of connecting with some incredibly friendly people over breakfast who later became my adventure buddies. From dining out to thrilling activities together. It's amazing how sharing a morning meal can lead to unforgettable experiences on the road.

2. Myth: Solo travel is dangerous. Nonsense! Book that Ticket, Girl

Truth: Let me tell you, bad stuff can happen anywhere – even in your own backyard when you're attempting to cook. Safety concerns can be addressed with careful planning and awareness. Many destinations are perfectly safe for solo travellers, and with the right precautions, you can have a secure and enjoyable journey.

Here some basic safety tips for the fearless solo explorer:

  • Don’t Overshare: Think of trust like fine wine – it gets better with time. No need to spill your life story to strangers right away. Keep the mystery alive; not everyone needs to know your solo status.

  • Use Common Sense: Sometimes, amidst the wonders of a new place, we forget the basics. Trust your gut and keep your wits about you, use your 'common sense goggles.

  • Night Owl? Drink Smart: Only accept drinks that you've seen poured. Let's avoid the whole "spiked drink" drama; we're here for the sights, not unexpected naps in the wrong places!

  • Hide Your Cash Girl: Money? Spread it like your favourite avocado spread! Multiple compartments, different pockets and keep those tips and small bills handy. Sometimes you do need to act broke just to avoid not getting ripped off lol! Jokes aside tell me why when you exchange money in local currency you feel like you're doing something illegal? Feels like coming out of a money heist movie.

  • The Buddy System, Even from Afar: Keep someone back home in the loop with your whereabouts. They're your virtual safety net! There is a quotes saying ; once i've sent you my location you are responsible for my safety no lie was said!

Remember: It's Adventures, Not Misadventures!

3. Myth: Solo travel is expensive.

Truth: Solo travel can be as budget-friendly as you make it. You have full control over your expenses, from choosing affordable accommodations to dining at local eateries. Plus, you don't have to compromise on your itinerary, making it easier to stick to your budget.

4. Myth: Solo travel is only for extroverts.

Truth: Introverts can thrive on solo adventures as well. Traveling alone allows you to set your own pace and choose when and how you socialise. It's an opportunity to embrace your own preferences and comfort zones.

5. Myth: Eating alone seems weird!

Truth: Dining solo is no biggie! Trust me, most people at the restaurant couldn't care less, and guess who shouldn't as well? You! Well, maybe in Denmark, they haven't quite mastered the art of solo dining yet, but hey, you know what ? You do you! If there's a restaurant you've been eyeing, go for it! This is your opportunity to savour the flavours and reflect on your day. Think of it as a culinary adventure with yourself as the star. Plus, you can use the moment to catch up with your friend and family back home and chat about your day. Let the food and good vibes just flow!

Conclusion: You just need to plan, research, and take the right precautions regarding your safety. There is so much in this world to see, and you should not hold yourself back from it out of fear. I don’t know about you, but I would rather say, “I’m glad I did it,” Instead of “I wish I had” so what are you waiting for?
